About the Artwork: Boucherie Charcuterie
Where I created this piece: Roussillon, the Luberon, Provence France.
What I love about this piece: Intensity meets simplicity and serenity. The stark, beautiful shadows stopped me in my tracks as I was walking down the hill in this tiny, ochre-painted hilltop town in Provence. The precision of the shop lettering, the stillness of the beaded doorway, and even the purpose of the shop itself (a butcher shop that also prepares meats) all echo the sharp relief of the shadows falling across the building in the late afternoon sun. And yet there is a softness and a serenity in this piece as well: the deep coral and orange tones, the simple beauty of the storefront design, and the textured evidence of the care taken in the hand-painted exterior walls encourage us to slow down and wander. I especially love the inviting glint of that silver door handle in the very center of the photograph - it makes me want to reach out and give the handle a gentle turn.
